At Whitchurch Montessori and Forest School, each day is filled with opportunities for exploration and learning. Our daily routine is designed to support each child’s development, providing a balance of structured learning activities and free play. What to expect on a typical day.
At the start of the day, your child will be warmly greeted at the door by their key person or a member of the key group team. You’ll have the chance to speak with one of the team to share any important updates or discuss what your child has been doing at home.
We believe in giving children the freedom to explore and discover at their own pace. Children can independently access a variety of exciting resources and activities, carefully selected to match their individual interests and needs. These resources are displayed on low-level shelving units or specially designed interest tables and trays, allowing children to self-select.
Mealtimes are a social occasion where children and practitioners come together to enjoy a meal in our family room. Two hot meals are served daily, courtesy of Hungry Moose, a catering company specialising in high-quality, nutritionally sourced food for nurseries and pre-schools. We cater for special dietary requirements and food allergies. Children also have access to snacks throughout the day, either in their home room or the family room. Older children have the responsibility of helping set up the lunch tables and preparing their own snacks at the snack café. We provide two healthy snacks daily, including fruit or vegetables, crackers, breadsticks, or flatbread, along with milk or water.
During a day full of activities, some children may need a nap to recharge. We create quiet, comfortable spaces where children can rest on sleeping mats after lunch or enjoy a quiet time with a story.
Children have the exciting opportunity to explore our Nursery Forest School, where they can learn new skills from our qualified Forest School Leader, such as den building, cooking over a fire, whittling, and using tools. They will also gain an understanding of how to care for the woodland environment.
With direct access to a covered outdoor area, children can freely move between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day. Our larger outdoor play area includes a range of activities such as running, climbing, cycling, ball games, playing in the mud kitchen, constructing with large materials, and exploring our sand and water zones. Children also enjoy painting on outdoor easels, investigating our bug hotel, and caring for plants in our growing area.
During this session, children engage in story and rhyme time to build confidence in speaking and listening. They explore the Nursery’s carefully selected core books and rhymes.
Small group activities and projects based on the children’s interests, the changing seasons, special community events, and our core books help further enrich their learning experience.
At the end of the day, you’ll have the opportunity to catch up with your child’s key person or another team member to hear about your child’s experiences and activities throughout the day. Our flexible approach to learning ensures that every child’s day is filled with fun discovery and learning. Get in touch to discover how we support your child's development.
Children can choose to participate in one of our exciting nursery clubs:
Children follow recipes, measure ingredients, and develop skills such as mixing, kneading, rolling, and cutting, all whilst learning about different foods and textures—plus, they get to enjoy eating their creations!
Through fun, hands-on experiments, children become budding scientists, making predictions, testing ideas, and sharing their discoveries.
